L’OREAL | Lash Paradise Mascara + Swatch

Once in a while, a lucky makeup product drops from the sky, gets blessed by unicorns and suddenly becomes the hot new thing to sell off of every shelf. Sure the photogenic metallic pink packaging does help but the L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara’s rise to fame took me by surprise.
Brand: L’Oreal
Product: Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara (WP)
Size: 7.61ml
Price: $13.99 CAD (approx.)
Availability: Walmart, Ulta (Drugstores nationwide)
Would I (re)purchase: Probably not.

INGREDIENTS: Aqua/Water/Eau, Paraffin, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Copernicia Cerifera Cera/Carnauba Wax/Cire De Carnauba, Ethylene/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Styrene/Acrylates/Ammonium Methacrylate Copolymer, Cera Alba/Beeswax/Cire Dabeille, Synthetic Beeswax, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Polybutene, Cetyl Alcohol, Steareth-20, Glyceryl Dibehenate, Steareth-2, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Acacia Senegal Gum, Tribehenin, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Behenate, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Hydrogenated Palm Oil, Disodium EDTA, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Silica, Tetrasodium EDTA, Potassium Sorbate, BHT, [+/- May Contain/Peut Contenir: CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499/Iron Oxides, CI 77007/Ultramarines]. Lash Paradise is an extension of L’Oreal’s long loved Voluminous mascara range which has been a makeup artist and magazine favourite long before bloggers were even a thing. This new reincarnation is packaged in a lightweight metallic pink tube with corresponding gold detailing. L’Oreal promises a feathery soft fringe with both length and volume.
With a classic bristle tipped brush, the shape slightly resembles a peanut – a longer profile with a dip in the center – this mascara holds a creamy formula but doesn’t actually deposit very much product so layering is required to build up intensity. I found the brush shape a little challenging to get to all my lash hairs but this tends to be part of the learning process of any new lash product and with a little practice, I could make it work. Lash Paradise went on very smoothly with little to no clumping but there seems to be a threshold where the mascara would no longer layer so volume capped at about 3 coats.
I would call the results natural on my fine straight lashes.

Wearing the waterproof version, as I always do with mascaras, Lash Paradise initially held my curls reasonably well but within a few hours it was noticeable that my lashes were loosing lift though it never went full flat. With a full day’s wear, there was a small amount of smudging, especially at the outer corners (#highcheekboneproblems) but there wasn’t any flaking. The mascara did loose it ooomph throughout the day but I felt it still held on fine until night time. As it did not rank high on the curl test, it wouldn’t be a choice for swimming or intense outdoor activities.
THINGS TO NOTE | Not for oily eyelids, not the best for super straight lashes, not a maximum impact mascara.

LOREAL Lash Paradise Review//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

L’Oreal’s Lash Paradise mascara is a decent everyday option for those who already have long lashes but want a little extra darkness, depth and definition. Between both its lengthening and volumizing claims, I’d say it’s more of the latter although other options at a lower price point also provide similar if not better volume. The formula has a good consistency and is easy to work with but beyond the basics, it didn’t dramatically wow me one way or the other. I have seen others with beautiful results so this might just be me and my challenging lashes but I feel Lash Paradise just caught a lucky social media wave and was hyped up a little more than what it actually is. Good for everyday but much too expensive for a drugstore product.

COVERGIRL | Total Tease Mascara + swatch

It’s official everyone, I have completely fallen in love with a new drugstore mascara and it’s been the favourite part of my makeup routine lately. Covergirl’s latest Total Tease mascara has a peculiar shaped comb style wand, is a bit tricky to learn but the result is everyday perfection.
Brand: Covergirl
Product: Total Tease Mascara* Waterproof
Size: 6.5ml
Price: $12.99 CAD
Availability: Drugstores nationwide
Would I (re)purchase: Yes!
Housed in a sleek black tube (good-bye chubby space hogging Lash Blast), this has a three sided design with plastic bristles. Two full length sides are for applying the product all over and the precision side with longer bristles is for teasing away clumps.
COVERGIRL Total Tease Mascara Review
The consistency is creamy and smooth with lots of depth. Despite being a lash separating mascara, it still coated my lashes generously and they were dark with just a few strokes whereas others in this category barely deposited any product. I found the brush wand itself just slightly too long for my eye shape so I would fill in the inner and outer corners with the smaller defining end. I love how this gave my lashes a classic defined but clean look, making them more visible yet not the chunky volume that I was used to wearing.
COVERGIRL Total Tease Mascara Review
BEFORE – AFTER | Lashes are curled and with mascara

As always I went with the waterproof version of this mascara to help me keep a curl throughout the day and not only did it keep my lashes up but they stayed up for 8-10hrs which is no easy feat! It does an excellent job of keeping my lashes lifted all day until I was ready to take it off. I wonder if this is a genius in formulation or because it applied consistently and smoothly over the entire length of my lashes.
I did notice some minor smudging onto my lower lash line but it wasn’t worse than all the other waterproof mascaras I’ve used to date and is only apparent at the outer corners of my eyes where my top lashes naturally touch the bottom when I blink. A quick swipe with a q-tip or tissue fixes it easily so I’m not bothered by it.

Overall there’s no major complaints about this mascara. Be careful with the application if you are used to putting the wand right to the root of your lashes as it has sharper bristles and remember to turn the brush to the correct side each time.

Covergirl’s Total Tease is a high performing lash defining mascara for those who are looking for depth, separation that’s great for the office but can also stand its own paired with your going out makeup. It creates a classic and clean look plus plenty of lift which lasts all day. You will need some practice with the wand to find out which side of the applicator fits you best but the smooth, dark and creamy formula will surely impress even those with fine lashes like mine who would normally pass on a lengthening mascara. Does this look a little like the Benefit Rollerlash? Maybe. But this one ticks all the boxes and it’s been a key item in my current daily makeup routine. You gotta try it!

Review: FAKE OUT! Organic Wear Mascara | Physicians Formula

You may know me as a high maintenance lash girl and for the most part you’d be right. But for the casual trip to the grocery store, I don’t need the full arsenal and thus came this mascara. The full flashing fuchsia and lime green packaging may be a little jarring but it worked and caught my attention when I was browsing through the list for a washable, easy on the eyes lash enhancing mascara. Even better? The 100% natural origin label sold me right then and there.

Brand: Physicians Formula
Product: Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara
Variation: Regular, Fake Out (both washable)
Colour: Black
Size: 7.5grams
Price: $10USD
Details: 100% natural origin ingredients, 70% organic, extension fibers, no parabens, no harsh chemicals, no synthetic dyes
Availability: Drugstores nationwide
Would I repurchase: No
Website: www.physiciansformula.com

The Organic Wear Fake Out mascara comes in one bright bold chrome finished tube with a stylish curved design, the cap embossed with a leaf design to reflect its natural origins. The tube itself is flat but the kitschy design does make this larger than most mascaras and thus a little hard to fit into a small makeup bag.

The wand is very large, with a football curved shape and composes of a thick inner wand with varying lengths of rubber bristles. In physique it seems to be a close cousin of the Covergirl Lash Blast which, due to its large size, ended up as the deciding factor in the love/hate relationship.

From the ingredients list, this looks to be a very wax heavy product which results in a thicker, almost creamy feeling mascara that coats the lashes easily. The rubber bristles did a great job at gently detangling my lashes while I piled on the coats however it certainly wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked.

Frankly, I’ve seen some nice looking fake outs from this mascara (here and here) but it seems to fall short on my lashes. As this is a washable mascara (and only waterproof products can hold my curl), I am not rating this on the curl factor but even looking at volume and length alone, this turned out to be a rather average product. And the lash extending fibers? Not a single one in sight as far as I could see.

Wear time was a mediocre 2-3hours before I noticed significant smudging that required a little clean up and slight flaking followed suit towards mid-day which again required touch ups.

On the brighter side, I did find this Fake Out mascara to leave my lashes soft and comfortable all day and even with the copious layering that I am known to do, the finish remained touchable and natural.

Thoroughly not impressed by the Physicians Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara and its effect on my lashes. Sure I may not have the easiest lashes to work with but this couldn’t even hold out on the none smudging, none flaking claims. Ideally this would be better suited for those who already have naturally curled medium density lashes who are just looking to darken and thicken with a bit of mascara. I love the idea of a natural mascara especially since it’s something I wear often but thus far, none have hit the mark. Let’s move on.

Review: Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara | Make Up For Ever

If there are two makeup items that women are constantly debating over, it’s foundation and mascara. When it comes to the latter, I am a hard customer to win over. Mascaras vary in formulation, brush, opacity and a plethora of minute details that needs to match not only to my own lash condition but also my desired results. With a name like Smoky Extravagant however, this mascara has much to live up to.

Brand: Make Up For Ever
Product: Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara*
Variation: Washable, Waterproof
Size: 0.23oz
Price: $28CAD
Availability: Sephora (Sephora online), Make Up For Ever Boutiques
Would I (re)purchase: Possibly
Let’s take a few steps back, this waterproof concoction in a tube is actually the new version of Make Up For Ever’s ever popular Smoky Lash that released a few years ago. The original formulation promises thick voluminous lashes that pairs well with a dramatic look.
For Summer 2014, this Aqua Smoky Extravagant touts micronized iron oxide pigments for an intense colour, pro vitamin b5 to nourish lashes, volume, length and curl in addition to being water and oil resistant.

A quick examination of the mascara in your hand and you’ll notice its unique brush head which comprises of a conical shaped design; a large size at the base and tapering to a precision tip. Formulation wise, I found the product to be quite creamy, easy to adhere to my fine lashes and easily combed through with the brush for an even distribution.

The before and after photos (below) shows the Aqua Smoky Extravagant applied to my curled lashes (with the Shu Uemura lash curler if you are interested) in two coats on both top and bottom. Note that I decided not to wear any eyeliner so you can see the full affect from this mascara alone. From experience, I never count on a mascara to curl my natural lashes but rather measure it’s ability to hold my curl in place all day.
As you can see, this gave me a very pretty fanned out and defined lash line. No lash comb was used and this mascara didn’t need it at all. For those with thinner lashes like mine, you’ll likely achieve more length and definition rather than any real smoky volume however I have seen some impressive dramatic result from those with better lash density. Surprisingly I found the conical brush easy to use and was actually very helpful in reaching to my corner lashes. I was also able to hold the wand vertically and really define the base.

My curl lasted well throughout the course of the day which and I loved how it was able to achieve that without a heavy formulation thus being completely comfortable and weightless to wear thanks to its synthetic thermoplastic resin coating that forms a film around each lash. This worked well for the waterproof claim however I did notice some minor smudging after a few hours which takes a point off the oil resistant claim for me.

Having been around the block with mascara products, I really thought I resigned myself to a few staple drugstore options. Yet the Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara caught me by surprise with its lash separating brush and all day definition, this is a mascara that this false lash addict would actually wear on a casual basis. Personally, I would have liked an extra dose of volume but I think you could easily layer this with another density building product to get the best of both worlds. The price is reasonable for the high end market (though a little expensive for my everyday budget) and it’s something I would happily pick up again when I feel like a bit of a splurge. This is a near perfect mascara for me. Enough said.

Review: Holika Holika | Magic Pole Mascara

What does a mascara wand look like?
Long, bristled brushed wands? Plastic bristles? Rubber tips? Maybe even a comb type?

HolikaHolika- Magic Pole Mascara
Brand: Holika Holika
Product: Magic Pole Mascara Waterproof*
Colour: #01 Ultra Black (shown),  #02 Mystic Purple
Variants: Washable version (purple tube)
Size: 9ml
Price: $13-16CAD
Available at : W2Beauty (free shipping), eBay, Korea Depart

Would I (re)purchase: No

As much as we can improve what goes inside the tube, the past few years has seen a surge in creative ways of reworking the mascara wand with some intriguing results. Korean brand Holika Holika has merged two popular trends in mascara, plastic bristle wands and the bulb design (think Givenchy Phenomen Eyes, L’Oreal Lash Explosion) into their hot selling Magic Pole Mascara.

HolikaHolika- Magic Pole Mascara
Beyond the eye catching design (how much do we love the swirls here!), Holika Holika created this product to be smudge resistant, ultra black, with good curling capabilities yet washes away easily with warm water. The bristle tips are made of a flexible rubber rather than plastic, making the brush section of the wand quite flexible when maneuvering into hard to reach corners. The mascara formula itself is a wax based rich deep black that’s more creamy instead of watery or dry.
HolikaHolika- Magic Pole Mascara
In function, I found the wand to work quite efficiently as I could coat a large middle area of my lashes with a few strokes of the short end, working the inner and outter corners with the bulb tip. Then a finally combing through my entire lash line with the longer bristles of the tip gave me dark, defined and separated lashes that still looked very natural….almost too natural.
For a volume seeking, false lash fanatic like myself this mascara just wasn’t volumizing enough for my personal taste. While it was fantastic at darkening up my lashes and enhancing the length, it just wasn’t very buildable. I would recommend working with it while it’s still wet because if you let it dry between layers then the subsequent coats tend to build unevenly over already mascaraed lashes. As a creature of habit, I automatically started loading up only to find it gave me some spidery looking results so remember the method of application is certainly an important factor for this mascara.

Holika Holka- Magic Pole Mascara

For anyone who is a fan of film type formulations, this is exactly what Magic Pole is. Because it coasts the lashes with a rubbery film, it shields against rain and most day to say smudges. However if you are prone to rubbing your eyes, skip this because bits of mascara film will flake onto your cheek when disturbed. To remove it, I cup some warm water in my palm over my eye area for a few seconds and then simply pinch and slide the film off my natural lashes. In fact, this is the best way to remove this type of mascara as opposed to makeup removers which left bits and pieces of mascara particles everywhere. If you’ve used anything like the TooFaced Lash Injection or Dejavu Fiberwig Mascara, the process is identical.
HolikaHolika- Magic Pole Mascara
Unfortunately, the formulation of Magic Pole did little to nothing in helping curl my lashes or even keeping a curl and in combination with it’s lack of volumzing power, it’s not likely something I would use again after this tube. Currently I’ve been pairing this with simple makeup consisting of bright cheeks, soft eyebrows and lip gloss. I have noticed though that since this formula wraps around my lashes with a film instead of coating onto them that my lashes aren’t dry and unhappy unlike using other waterproof products on a regular basis.

Recommended for :: Anyone who has medium to full density lashes who are looking for definition, colour, separation and a bit of lengthening. Great for those who prefer a natural makeup look and those who already have some curl to their lashes. Long lasting but easy to remove. If you’re feeling extra magical, there’s also “Mystic Purple” available!

Review: Essence | Get BIG! Lashes mascara + swatch

I think I’ve really hit the beauty jackpot this past month because I’ve been surprised by so many wonderful products, many of which absolutely exceeded my expectations. For those who have been following me for some time will know that I am a die hard Maybelline mascara girl, after going around the block, I’ve just settled that nothing much else will keep my lashes curled and happy. When I was in the drugstore stocking up on some Essence products last time, I suddenly remembered the recommendations people made from my first Essence haul video…mascara was one of them. Apprehensively, I picked through the sparse choices that I were available on the Essence shelf and decided on this massive blue tube, after all if it was really bad I only wasted the price of large latte right?

Essence Get Big Lashes _03
Brand: Essence
Product: Get BIG! Lashes Mascara (wp)
Variation: Washable & waterproof
Size: 12ml
Price: $3.99 CAD

Availability: Select Shoppers Drug Mart (in Canada), Ulta (USA)
Would I repurchase: Absolutely YES!

I’d usually start by talking about the brush, the formula and all that but I’m so thrilled with the results that I’m just going to show you how they look first. Here’s my bare lashes versus the Get BIG! mascara, as you can see the results are very natural, separated yet full. It did not give massive volume like it did for some other people (I’ve seen some pretty magical results) but instead a more believable fluttery look as if I’m not wearing anything at all but was born with long soft lashes. This darkened my lashes and brought more definition to them overall. Being a big lash kinda gal, I ran this through several times more, building up the layers and yet there was minimal clumping if any at all.
Essence Get big lashes mascara swatch
Even more fabulous is the fact that this kept my curl the entire day while I was out about town plus it did not smudge or crumble onto my cheeks (something I fully expected to happen but didn’t). Taking a closer look at the brush, you’ll notice that it’s huge…I mean seriously massive. The shape is very full with dense bristles but with a sharp tapered tip which looks practically identical to the DIOR Diorshow mascara wand. The formulation itself is quite creamy and has a slightly glossy finish, lending to the natural look and feel of the product on the lashes.

Essence Get Big Lashes _02

You can get a full preview of all Essence products from their website, it features all their permanent items but I’ve heard that they do release limited editions too if you’re lucky to find them.
Overall I am extremely thrilled with this little find or shall I say big tubed find? It is a little large for my travel makeup bag but for what it does I will find a way to stuff it in. Absolutely worth a try if you are seeking something to give you natural looking yet full definition that makes people wonder if your lashes are born like this. I’d never thought I would be happy with less drama on my yes but I’ve gotta admit it looks so pretty and flirty that I’ve been wearing it almost daily. I shall nickname this my “Diva on vacation” mascara.

Winter Therapy: Gift ideas and new items

Hello all you Snow Bunnies!
I’m excited to bring you today’s post featuring some fun winter products I’ve found that would also make wonderful gifts. In fact, I happened upon most of them while I was out completing my holiday gift list. You’ll also get a peak at some new drugstore releases… well then, what are you waiting for?

Click the video to enjoy!

A quick photo round up…

Winter Therapy haul (12.2011)

These Bath and Body works products are just darling! I’ve never splurged too much on bodycare, what you’ll find most often in my drawers are $2.99 bottles of Vaseline. However I think these products just create a lovely experience overall, these days I can’t wait to shower so I can put on the body creams. They aren’t too expensive at their regular price (much less than I thought they would be) but it’s certainly a great treat when they are on BOGO! You’ll definitely be seeing more Bath and Body works products featured in the future.

 Winter Therapy haul (12.2011)

Ooooh, this love/hate relationship with my hair. I know it’s time for a trim and eventually take off all my coloured ends but I can’t bare to part with my hair just yet. Thus I’ve been looking up and down for great hair treatments. The Garnier Fructis was a delightful surprise, I even went back to pick up an extra bottle and also a frizz serum from the Sleek and Shine line (reviews to come when I’m ready!) As for the JOICO K-Pak Reconstructor? There are no words for how thrilled I am to see this sitting in my bathroom. I have yet to find a hair care line that performed in the same way as this ph-balance, protein rich JOICO system. Try looking for them in “sets” which are often at discounted prices, these guys are sure to please all!

 Winter Therapy haul (12.2011)

I’m sure these Revlon Lip Butters have been hyped to the moon and back. The new trend in lipcare products seem to be this new balm/lipstick hybrid which seems to me like a lip version of “BB Creams”. Meant to treat and paint your pout in lovely shades of cranberry, ruby, raspberry and caramel, I love the way they make lips look but really wished they were less expensive. The pink tube is twisted all the way up and even though it’s new, the total product seems quite minimal. There should at least be 20-30% more in the tube in my opinion.

And lastly, I shall leave you with this photo of some new releases and my ASOS order. I really wished that ASOS would carry more UK lines, it’s always incredibly exciting to be able to test out products from other parts of the world. The Union Jack Rimmel palette is said to be released in Spring 2011 in North America (probably later for us in Canada) and is likely to have a slight variation in colour theme than the UK version. Unfortunately, I can’t be sure when and if the Kate collection of lipsticks will ever cross the pond.

Winter Therapy haul (12.2011)

Look out for reviews and tutorial featuring these new drugstore products very soon, I have a couple looks planned which I think will go very well with these items. I hope you guys are looking forward to the holidays and getting wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the season, it only happens once a year!

Brand: DIOR got me week in the knees

There aren’t too many high-end brands that I think are worth the splurge and while many feature limited edition designs and colours, there’s really only a few that REALLY always gets me weak in the knees.

One of them is DIOR.
Albeit not all DIOR products are worthwhile, their powder products (especially eye shadows) are certainly drool-worthy. So here’s a look at some of the best (and most hyped about) DIOR products….so we can all drool together!
Diorskin Shimmer Star
  • Amber Diamond & Rose Diamond shades

(0.35 Oz)

  • Containing Jeweled Microdust, ultra fine and super blendable

This is one of those products that has been hyped to the moon and back but I have yet the chance to try it out for myself. Even people who aren’t huge DIOR lovers own this item, it comes in 2-3 shades and is supposed to give you that surreal glow. If you’re a big fan of highlighters, you may want to check this one out. Looking for a swatch/review? MissNatty has got a great on here!

DIORShow Brow Styler
  •   Universally flattering shade (not kidding, I think it works!)
  • Ultra fine precision tip with brush tool
I actually tested this out at Sephora a while back when I was hunting for a brow pencil. The ease of use and the wonderful texture drew me in me but it was more expensive then I could afford, in the end I purchased the MUFE Brow Pencil. However this one is still at the top of my wishlist!

DIORShow Mascara
There are no words to describe how much insane hype surrounds this mascara, they claim its the ultimate in luxe lashes, they claim its the IT item for runways shows, practically every makeup artist “advice” column talks about this mascara.
Is there any truth to all this?

Maybe just alittle, I agree that the big brush is a huge turn-on as it packs alot of product which can be densely dispersed onto the lashes coating them up lushly. While this does give volume, it gave me absolutely no lift, little length and it started to dry up and flake very very quickly. [*note: I was not using the waterproof version] So I’d say, unless you already have perfectly curled lashes, skip on this one.

DIOR Mitzah Panther Eyeshadow–Jungle Print
You’ve gotta hand it to a couture brand like DIOR to make the most beautiful limited edition items and each season I eagerly anticipate what they will bring out for the holiday season/winter collections. This year, its a animal print eyeshadow palette featuring a trio blend of safari browns….not quite sure how functional this will be once you start using it. But hey, that’s couture right?

DIOR 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palette
Earth Reflection
Rosy Tan
Stylish Move
Ready to Glow
Here’s an iconic item that I really think is worth the investment, DIOR’s powder eyeshadows have this incredible smooth and soft texture…almost a wet feel that glides on the eyes so well that sometime I wonder if its a cream shadow. Now bewarned that almost all the quints have a high-shine metallic finish (may not be your taste) and that because of this finish, some of the combinations that have very light colours don’t show up with enough differentiation. I find the colours very long lasting even without a primer/base on the lids and they just blend so well. I really can’t find a major fault with these gorgeous palettes…these are uber chic and absolutely embodies the DIOR couture aesthetic.
DIOR 3 Colour Smokey eyes palette
This is one of the newer items from DIOR that I haven’t had the opportunity to swatch/check out yet. However I am greatly intrigued as this combines a creamy base along with 2 contrasting powder shadows. The idea sounds great and I am loving the choice of 6 colour combinations. I can see this as a great everyday investment.

 DIOR Skinflash Primer

Though I’ve never been an avid user of foundation primers, it’s still a product that’s often got me intrigued. The promise of long-lasting foundation, poreless skin and skin caring ingredients all sound pretty good to me! Especially since I became a frequent reader of Japanese magazines, many of the Asian brands take great care in the preparation of skin before any concealer or foundation even touches the face. This DIOR primer has certainly caught my eye, I’m just hoping it won’t be heavily silicone loaded like the Smashbox ones…my face isn’t too fond of heavy cones. I am hoping that it will also contain some vitamins or something bonus….
Well this wraps up my little overview on DIOR, I have tried out some of their skincare but since they have completely re-edited their basic skincare line it wouldn’t have helped to much for me to talk about it now.

Let me know if you have a favourite DIOR item!
