Review: Annabelle | Twist Up Lip Crayon + Swatches

Fall weather brings with it hot cocao, fuzzy sweaters and (my personal favourite) a whole lotta lipstick. While lipstick goes any time of the year, I often feel that the colder weather is exceptionally suited to rich lipstick textures and colours that make the most of this indispensable beauty item. This season, Canadian brand Annabelle Cosmetics has added three new colours to their wildly popular TwistUp Lipstick/Crayon that will add some drama to your everyday makeup look.

With an impressive 24 shades in a wide array of colours, Annabelle’s Twist Up lip crayons are simply just that, no sharpening required lipstick like portables with big colour and an unexpected shiny finish. The update to this fall/winter season included three beautiful reds in “Cherry”, “Vamp” and “Monroe”.

“Cherry” is fully extended to show the amount of product.
(If you’re wondering why mine has stickers instead of labels, I have the preview packaging.)

While many of the lipstick crayons I’ve swatched on the market tends to be on the sheer or balmy side, I am happy to report that Annabelle’s version is loaded with beautiful pigments that have medium to buildable colour payoff and great saturation. To my surprise, a few swipes also imparted a shiny finish on the lips that looked much more luxurious than what you’d see from most drugstore offerings.

Wearing: “Vamp” Lip Crayon + “Bourdaux” Lip Liner (Annabelle)
The texture of these lip crayons are smooth and easy to apply without being overly waxy. Containing a mix of Omega 3 + 6 as well as shea butter, I didn’t find these superbly moisturizing yet the formulation did not dry out my lips at all and they wore comfortably for an easy 3-4 hours. For something that applied with this amount of easy and slip, they also surprised me by having minimal feathering or bleeding, even with the darkest shade like Vamp.
When it comes to a perfect application (especially with these brighter/richer shades), I certainly recommend lining the lips with a matching pencil before filling in with the crayon as the bigger bullet makes it hard to create a sharp outline and can get a little fuzzy around the edges. And because they are so blendable, you can mix blend two (or more) shades together to create a multi-dimensional gradient look.

Overall in terms of formulation and texture, I found these Twist Up Lipstick Crayons from Annabelle to be one of the best well rounded products in the drugstore for true colour lovers. The fact that they are fragrance free and paraben-free are the icing on the cake. Personally I would like to see the price point lowered by a dollar or two but that doesn’t take away from the fact that these are some beautiful lip colours. Have a swatch next time you’re out in the shops, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed and in fact, you may just go home with a few.

A PHOTO RECAP…

Bunnie Favourites
Tony Moly Dual Effect Sleeping Pack
  • This product absolutely surprised me, I was new to sleeping masks but after receiving a sample of this with an order I was incredibly intrigued. What worried me most was the thick silicone texture of the cream/mask, fearing that it might clog my pores horribly but to my delight I did not have any breakouts but instead was left with glowly well hydrated skin the next morning.
  “Friction” by FCUK
  • If you’ve read my review on this perfume (HERE), you would already know that I’m head over heels for this summery fruity-coconut cocktail. Just the right amount of sweet fruitiness with a lingering dry-down of sandalwood and musk I think Friction is an unexpectedly well made perfume that will please anyone wanting a flirty sexy scent.

Annabelle Lip liners
  • Though I am still in the exploratory stages with lip liners, Annabelle’s lip liner products stand out as being hard working, flattering and reasonably priced. For the occasional lip liner user, these pencils provide the perfect combination of firmness and pigmentation so you don’ have to drag it across your lips to get the right amount of colour. The slighter firmer texture also means the line is less likely to smudge and it was comfortable to wear even when I filled my entire lip area with the pencil.

Maybelline “Pearly Pink”
&
Hard Candy “Girl Next Door”
  • If you’ve never been weary of wearing a pearl or frost lipstick, try a combo like the pair I mentioned in the video. Wearing a pinky gloss with a very fine shimmer will tone down the sheen from the lipstick and the added glossy shine will make the look much more approachable. Choose a lipstick with a good amount of opacity/tone is also important, my favourite of the moment is this yummy duo of “Pearly Pink” with “Girl next door” on top.

NYX in “TS17” shadow palette
  • From first glance this palette was absolutely not my cup of tea. I’ve always adored the taupey brown eye look that I’ve seen other people pull off so effortlessly but on myself I felt the cool tones look unnatural. Well in came this palette from a sweet love package and it completely changed my mind. Even though the shadows have a silvery taupey look in the pan, as I hesitantly applied on my eyes the colours just blended together beautifully. The result was an eye look that was different enough from my day to day warm/coppery browns but still neutral enough so I can pair it with any lipstick.

Review: Annabelle Eyeshadow Pans

One of my favourite affordable eyeshadow brands is ANNABELLE, they are a Canada exclusive company that make a whole range from bases to lipsticks and they even release limited edition products with special packaging and all that jazz!

Recently they have made their eyeshadow singles in single PAN formats (just like MAC pans) and they retail for under $5 CAD each but you can often find them on sale for $2.99CAD (Shoppers Drug Mart). I used to get the pot singles then de-pot them into my MAC palettes (they FIT!).

STATS:

  1. Colours: matte, frost, shimmer/velvet (my favourite), sparkle
  2. Wear: Good, but do use a base if you happen to have oily eyelids.
  3. Texture: I only have their shimmer ones (looks like MAC Veluxe Pearl) and they are extremely soft and easy to apply.
  4. Colour payoff: Again, i can only speak for shimmer ones but they are pretty darn good if you ask me 🙂
  5. Price: CHEAP
  6. Conclusion? Beats out Maybelline and Covergirl Eyeshadows for me anyday!

*They also sell the 4-pan palettes for the shadows that have magnetic backing so your metal pans pop right in there.
