MILK | Hydro Grip Primer

Well, this is unexpected – today I’m talking to you about the MILK Makeup Hydro Grip Primer which for a couple of months had gotten an incredible amount of chatter when it first released. This is also my very first product trial from MILK, their too cool for me holographic aesthetic is a little wild for my taste but when on the look out for a summer time foundation primer that’s silicone free, this was a high contender.

Here’s what MILK says about Hydro Grip…

HIT OF HYDRO: Hemp-derived cannabis seed extract hydrates to plump and smooth for blissed-out skin.

GRIP IT: A shot of blue agave extract forms an invisible layer to grip makeup for all-day hold. Allow formula one minute to fully absorb to activate full grip effect.

DOSE UP: Aloe water, cherry blossom, hyaluronic acid, and B vitamins boost skin for a healthier-looking base and a glassy, post-hot-yoga-class glow.

UNIVERSAL GOODNESS: Silicone-free, oil-free, green-tinted formula blends in clear to work across all skin tones and types.

PACKAGING & DESIGN

When it comes to packaging design, MILK has done a fantastic job of keeping a cohesive look to their brand while also making things practical. I have no complaints about the sturdy plastic pump and cap design; even more so I love that it’s an air sealed pumping system which means the bottom pushes up as you deplete the bottle. Clear packaging also means you can see exactly how much is left. Spring system is accurate and easy to control – total win!

TEXTURE & APPLICATION

It feels like rubbing aloe vera gel on your skin … and that’s not a bad thing once you get used to it. Note that aloe is actually the first ingredient on the list which in hierachical order means that this primer is packed full of this cooling, slightly sticky, skin calming substance. The gel consistency is best applied with fingers in a dap and rub motion then left to set slightly on the skin before foundation, MILK recommends 1 minute.

Foundation application does get a little tricky; the tacky texture means product doesn’t blend as smoothly on the skin because of the grip. I recommend applying liquid foundation with a beauty blender for best results… powder foundation would seem like a really bad idea. Brushes tend to drag across the tacky surface, again making foundation hard to blend.

Satin and luminous finish foundations with more fluid textures work best with the Hydro Primer, matte finishes just becomes a bit of a clumpy patchy mess and blending over my nose is a no-go altogether. This means its not a universally friendly pairing with my foundation collection and limits its usage.

WEAR & LONGEVITY

Here’s where things get a little interesting. I don’t find my makeup lasting longer in total hour count however it looks better for longer throughout the day. In the final hours, it wears off just like any other foundation/ foundation primer does. Essentially, it does hold itself together a little longer and takes longer time to break down but I don’t find it extends my makeup wear by an extremely notable amount of time. When it starts going downhill, it goes down hard just like most primers I own.

SKIN SENSITIVITY

No sensitivity at all. No strong detectable fragrance in product. No breakouts.

THE FINAL VERDICT

MILK’s Hydro Grip Primer is a good silicone-free under-layer to your liquid foundation that gives a small boost of initial moisture and a little extra stick to your base makeup… literally. The tacky texture is less compatible with matte foundations or powder foundations (including mineral makeup). Hydro-Grip is not going to make your makeup bullet proof or sweat proof but if you want something that simply holds your face together a little better than usual and you don’t like matte primers, this is a very likeable choice.

IT COSMETICS | CC+ Cream Matte

REVIEW | AFFILIATE LINKS

Cue the dramatic stage lights everybody – today we’re talking about the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Matte SPF40* which launched in 2018 following the incredibly successful original CC+ Cream. Same-same but different, this  version came as a response to those who either preferred a more matte finish or had oily skin and had trouble making the first version last. This matte release contains similar claims but is tweaked for those with larger pores, oily and/or acne prone skin challenges.

Here’s what IT Cosmetics has to say…

Developed with plastic surgeons, Your Skin But Better CC+ Oil-Free Matte with SPF 40 delivers color-correcting full coverage, anti-aging skincare and SPF 40 broad-spectrum physical sunscreen—all with a poreless, natural-looking matte finish that lasts! This multitasking, complexion-perfecting breakthrough instantly camouflages skin imperfections including dark spots without creasing or cracking and is clinically tested to reduce shine and control oil for up to 12 hours. It’s also infused with charcoal to detoxify, colloidal clay to absorb oil and tea tree extract to combat blemishes—plus, an advanced anti-aging serum made of hydrolyzed collagen, peptides, niacin, hylauronic acid, vitamins and antioxidants. You’ll see powerful results instantly and more dramatic results over time!

THE BASICS

Brand: IT Cosmetics
Product: CC+ Foundation Matte
Details: SPF 40
Colours: Fair (11 listed on website)
Size: 32ml
Price: 48CAD
Would I (re)purchase: Probably yes.
Shop this product: IT Cosmetics, Sephora, QVC

Identical in basic packaging to the original CC+ Cream, the matte version differentiates itself by being blue instead of silver but the rest of the squeeze tube and pump dispensing design remains the same. I have to say that I love how practical and easy this is, you can get every last smidge of the product out plus it’s safe and worryless to travel with if you need to. There are currently 11 shades listed on their website and my closest match would be Fair – ultra porcelain, fairest of fair with yellow skin tones – and while I appreciate a brand finally putting yellows in fair shades, I would hardly say this is ultra fair. It matches my NC15-NC20 skin just fine though and does not oxidize. I rarely say this but I adore that this has SPF40 in a physical format without compromising on the look of the foundation itself. Beauty Look | Berry & Bright – ft. Shu Uemura x Maison Du Chocolate

AFFILIATE LINKS

This one is for all you chocolate lovers. Shu Uemura‘s limited edition holiday 2018 collection this year features a delicious collaboration with La Maison du Chocolate – a Parisan boutique creating confectioneries of it’s namesake. A few weeks ago, I posted a video preview of the items I have in my hands courtesy of the always generous Shu PR and today I’m sharing a complete look created using the products themselves, of course with a holiday theme.

The two big colour items in this collection are the Ganache & Praline eight pan eyeshadow palettes; Dark Cacao which takes on slightly cooler, taupe tones with flecks of gold and alternatively, Framboise Berry which includes nuances of reds in the form of berries, terracotta and copper. As a challenge, I decided to create my look centered around only the red shades so in a way this is a dark eyes and dark lip combination!

MAKING REDS MORE WEARABLE

  • Pile on the foundation | My skin is certainly far from model perfect but when wearing red tones, be it lips or yes, any redness of the skin is enhanced so it’s a good time to go higher coverage.
  • Be selective about colour placement | I focused the heaviest berry colour on the outer corners of the eyes and also smoked it out a little around the lower lash line. If you look carefully however, I didn’t connect the colour all the way around the eye – instead the lower outer lash line is lined with a bronze metallic pencil.
  • Skip the heavy liner | This look has no eyeliner on the top what so ever and it’s a conscious decision to keep it from looking too theatrical. However, I did balance it out with false lashes – which I thought was a must – in order to still enhance definition for the eyes. I highly recommend choosing lashes that aren’t super dense, focused more on length and has a clear band to blend in better with your own natural lash line.

3 Things | Best of PIXI Beauty

FLASH REVIEW | AFFILIATE LINKSTaking a beauty brand international is no easy feat, never mind making it all the way across the Atlantic Ocean but PIXI – famous for a variety of cult favourites – seems to have solidified it’s spot in our everyday vocabulary. Originally from the UK, these little green boxes are delightfully cheerful but not to be underestimated – packs a few good hidden gems too.

EYELINER PENCIL | These are undoubtedly the first things I tried and immediately fell in love with from PIXI. True to it’s name, these Endless Silky Eye Pencils* come in a rainbow of shades (21 the last time I counted) and are super smooth to use. The creamy texture feels almost like an oil pastel but there’s no greasiness here, it dries rub-proof to the touch in just a few seconds. In one word, this is just easy to use and doesn’t make a fuss. It’s labeled as waterproof and although I’ve never actually taken it out for a dip, I can say these are just as long lasting on me as pricier brands. If you have oily eyelids, these will still require a mid day touch-up but hey, I’ve also never met an eye pencil that didn’t. Continue reading

3 Things | Cold weather scents

FLASH REVIEW | AFFILIATE LINKSWinter Fragrances

Welcome to the very wet Pacific West coast version of autumn. Whether you’re the type to go thunderstorm watching or prefer to hygge on your couch, one thing we can all get excited about is rotating our fragrances for the season. I generally sort my collection into summer, winter and neutrals then pick and choose which ones fancy my mood. Currently on rotation are these three beauties.

MYRRH & TONKA : JO MALONE | Nobel, sensuous, captivating – this is how Jo Malone describes this rich dark bottle that is part of their cologne intense collection. This is my first experience with the brand but I didn’t want to go for the usual options, instead I was drawn to the heavier and lavish scents of this range. A tinge of spice wrapped up in the warm of tonka bean, this is one to use sparingly during the day and is perfectly paired with your cold weather woolens. The top note of lavender adds a hint of floral but this certainly reads as an oriental – sophisticated, mysterious and dreamy.

SUEDED OUD: CLEAN RESERVE | Another oriental option but this time with a bright and floral note is this charming bottle from CLEAN. This is a great day time scent that doesn’t weigh you down yet still has that tinge of autumnal freshness; like walking down a city street after the rain with the damp leaves under your feet. Honeysuckle and birch wood great you in the top notes followed by the familiar scent of jasmine and magnolia all cradled by the softness of suede – light, beautiful and classic.

L’ABSOLU: NARCISO RODRIGUEZ | The headier version of my fragrance of the year, this L’Absolu is a seductive take on white florals – tuberose, jasmine wrapped up in musk with a base of sandalwood and patchouli. Less pretty and more sexy, this fragrance really needed the cold weather to tone it down but is powerful when used sparingly. Its the liquid version of a power suit – unabashed, self assured, feminine.

Now it’s your turn, let me know what you’re wearing this fall and winter season.
