The past year has been so good for lipstick lovers. After years of ho-hum products, brands are embracing lips all over again and this time reviving some old formula ideas but in modern textures. Take matte lip colour for example; not a new concept but one that’s taking so many reincarnations lately. My latest experiment? Revlon’s Ultra HD Matte Lipsticks.

Now if you’re looking for a truly no-shine, absolutely dry, no funny business matte lip product. Turn around and move on.
These Ultra HD Mattes (an add on to their already well loved Ultra HD Lipsticks – reviewed) are a more forgiving liquid lipstick with a satin to soft matte finish. Essentially these frosted chunky tubed wands are 2016 versions of liquid lipsticks without the awful paint effect of the 90s-2000s or any of that over the top metallic sheen. L’oreal Rouge Pulp anyone?
With a familiar doe foot velvet applicator the formula is smooth and offers very even medium buildable coverage but you’ll probably need two full pumps to really coat your lips in colour. Recall that the Ultra HD is Revlon’s no wax range so these are actually a gel cream texture. Scented with the same sugary candy fragrance as the rest of the original Ultra HD range, I found the consistency very easy to work with (not too runny, not too thick) and it’s rather forgiving if you happen to forget to prep your lips with exfoliation. These do apply with a moist look and takes about 10 minutes before they settle into a satin look and even then it’s not a kiss proof, food proof formula. But there’s also never any colour bleeding around the lips and it easily smoothes over lip lines instead of enhancing them.
Wear time averages about 4-5 which I think is quite good considering how comfortable these are on the lips and I never needed to profusely prep with lip balm prior to putting them on so they are quick and non fussy whenever the mood hits you. Reapplication goes well and it doesn’t crust and crack or peel. The darker shades do leave a stain even after a meal and will hang around until you remove it properly with a makeup cleansing product.
THE FINAL VERDICT
The Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipsticks are an easy, fool proof way to try out the liquid lipstick trend with out being the a slave to dry lips. Everything from the consistency to the application and colours range screams easy to wear, office appropriate and approachable. While these are not the true mattes of what’s available on the market today I really love this style and think its a safe medium point for those who want a few dependable everyday lip options with slightly longer wear time than your average lipstick and an ultra comfortable feel. Great for young lip and more mature lips or the dry season. Take that winter!
