Review: Korres | Lip Butter "Pomegranate"

Korres had their big breakthrough moment when they first appeared in the shops of Sephora a few years ago. Hailing from the sunshine land of Greece and with their focus on natural ingredients (which at the time was still relatively new in the mass market) the brand quickly gained a faithful following. One of these iconic Korres items is the Lip Butter which comes in small colourful pots, ready to heal dry chapped lips.

Let me start this review with a small refresher on this magical term “lip butter”, which by now is thrown around left and right, thus it seems many companies (even drugstore) has products which they consider to be soft, buttery and emollient. In short, they can be seen as similar to a tinted lip balm but coloured lip butters seem to pack a bit more colour and is more creamy rather than waxy. When I first encountered the Korres lip butters (2010 – 2011), the term was still very new and thus quite innovative.

I purchased a lip butter and glaze set (both in pomegranate) from Sephora in San Francisco which was sold at a great price, only $15 USD for the two. Opening up the small plastic container, the product itself indeed looks quite buttery, the consistency is one which melts smoothly onto my lips and imparts a surprisingly bright pop of colour. The colour saturation varies depending on the shade but with the exception of Jasmine, all the others offer a visible juicy tint to the lips that borders on a light coverage lipstick with a soft balmy shine. The texture is very creamy or “buttery” as you can say and has no waxy feel at all, much more like a lip moisturizer. My pomegranate version is lightly scented with a sweetly tart fragrance which I actually quit enjoy.

The description actually claims various benefits from each flavour by means of the included extracts but looking through the ingredients list, I highly doubt how effective they actually are. I certainly don’t consider polybutene to be very natural and that’s at the top of the ingredients list, the actual pomegranate is listed much lower down as punic granatum extract. None the less I am very happy with these because it smoothes out my lip lines and makes my lips look naturally juicy, voluptuous and dare I say kinda sexy in a “girl next door” way. For daily use these lip butters are certainly worthy of my makeup bag, I like using it to refresh my lips when they are looking drab. With continued use I did find my lips to be slightly softer even after the butters have worn off but these are far from an intensive treatment so in the moisturization department, I’d only recommend them for maintenance use. While these are not terribly expensive, at $16 a pop Canadian, they seem a bit unreasonable here considering the much lower American price but they will be repurchased when I find them again in a Sephora across the border. Get them if you can, especially if it comes in a kit!

Looks nice, but I prefer my balms in the form of a lipstick. These jars are a pain to get product out when you have long nails and I won't for sure be using a brush for a lip balm! LOLThanks for the review, though ^^ xx

I love these and I love Korres. I bought the pots on its own a long time ago and then like two years ago Sephora had the gift sets of like 4 lip butters and 3 cherry oil lip gloss; I don`t remember… something like that. ANYWAYS (sorry for the detour) I love them but found that the consistency varies from the the different types. I love the more emollient ones like Quince and I think I had and loved Rose and Pomegranate. The really light almost white Jasmine and the deep red Plum were more matte in finish and also didn`t feel as nourishing. I still use them and like them but not as much. I felt those colours sat on my lips and didn`t nourish deep down.So my two cents. Anyways, Love you and your blog.

I remember that they sometimes sell the sets at Sephora! Didn't know about the different consistencies though, thank you for sharing that, I'll have to keep that in mind next time I'm out shopping for these again.
